Total Defence Day

The theme for this year’s Total Defence Day (TDD) is ‘Together We Keep Singapore Strong’. In line with this theme, the oNE Committee planned a host of activities to bring about an impactful and meaningful experience for all Woodgrovers and strengthen our resolve to keep Singapore safe, secure and sovereign.

The 2-week long TDD commemoration started with a special roadshow by the Woodlands East Neighbourhood Police Centre. There was a special display of tactical equipment such as shields, helmets and bullet resistant vests.

Woodgrovers also had the opportunity to have a look at the fast response car that was on display. On the following day, Woodgrovers were treated to a skit by Drama Arts entitled, ‘The Survivor Stories’. The play depicted how the different races survived the Japanese Occupation.

It was told from the point of view of people who lived during the war based on the oral history recordings of war survivors.  In addition, we also invited Mr Salim Mohamed Nasir, Associate Research Fellow at the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR) at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies to speak on Terrorism.

Concurrently, our Secondary four boys attended the National Service Engagement Talk at the AVA Room. We have invited our alumni, Mr Haikel Lee who shared his personal experience during National Service. In addition, our invited guest speaker, SAF Veteran, Major Brian (RET) also shared his personal stories of struggle, experiences, and successes as a member of the SAF. Hosted by our Humanities teacher, Mr Fariz Tajularus, the NS Engagement session shed new light and perspective on National Service and reinforce our students’ conviction to serve the country.

On 15 February 2019, our Vice Principal, Mr Tan Boon Cheng delivered the TDD Speech. Mr Tan’s speech focussed on the importance of unity and resilience in the face of future threats and challenges and he reminded Woodgrovers that we should not take our peace and security for granted.  The National Cadet Corps unit also put up a spectacular display of their Free Style Drill.

On the same morning, our Secondary 2 and 3 NE Ambassadors attended a War Memorial Service in commemoration of the civilian victims of the Japanese Occupation as well as Total Defence Day Commemoration at the War Memorial Park. This annual service reaffirms the importance of Total Defence and educates young Singaporeans to cherish peace and freedom in our country.

In the following week, classes were rostered to attend the Security Threats Mobile Exhibition in the AVA Room. This mobile exhibition was put up by the Internal Security Department (ISD) and encompassed three broad themes i.e. Security Timeline from 1940s – 2000s, ISIS and SGSecure. Our very own NE Ambassadors and docents from the ISD facilitated the mobile exhibition.
