International Friendship Day
On 6 April 2018, the school commemorated International Friendship Day to highlight the importance of Singapore's relations with neighbouring countries and beyond.
The purpose of International Friendship Day is raise awareness towards the geo-political realities in Singapore, as well as nurture the spirit of friendship and collaboration among different people. The theme for this year is ‘Celebrating the ASEAN community’.
During the morning assembly on 6th April, the NE Ambassadors took centre stage to lead the celebrations. Dressed in traditional costumes, they marched in with the flags of all the ASEAN countries. There was a sharing by one of our students on her experiences as a
student who moved from Philippines to Singapore 10 years ago, followed by a
special performance by Woodgrove Awesome contestants who sang a popular
Filipino folk song entitled ‘Anak’, which has been translated to many
languages, including Malay and English.
The highlight of the celebrations was the traditional drinks booth at the Symphonic Corner. Students were excited to try out beverages from our neighbouring countries. The NE Ambassadors distributed samples of Thai Iced Milk Tea as well as Vietnamese Coffee to long lines of students, during their recess.
Throughout the week, there were also
various activities to engage students and raise awareness. During the secondary
one PE lessons, students had the opportunity to learn traditional games such as
‘Sepak Takraw’ and ‘Chapteh’, which are unique to Southeast Asian countries.
The CCE lessons in Term 2 Week 3 were also specially crafted for the different levels to understand the different aspects of international friendship which include economic, social and cultural ties.
