WGS Speech Day 2012

Woodgrove Secondary School celebrated its 13th Annual Speech Day on Saturday, 14 July 2012. This annual event is aimed at according recognition to the academic and non-academic achievements of Woodgrovers over the past year. Centred on the theme of ConneXion, this year’s event also represented an ideal platform to show our gratitude and appreciation to our partners, vendors, suppliers, parents and staff who have contributed so much to the school over the years.

The Guest-of-Honour at the event was Professor Leo Tan Wee Hin. Professor Tan is a veteran marine biologist, well-known for his contributions to science, education and the conservation efforts in Singapore. Over the years, Professor Tan has received numerous awards for his work. In recent years, these have included the President’s Science & Technology Medal, the President’s Award for the Environment and the Honorary Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Biology. Professor Tan’s passion for the environment resonated with the Green Movement in our school and we were inspired by his insightful comments on environment education in schools.

The day’s events began with Professor Tan launching the ‘ConneXion@ Woodgrove’, a newly designed nursery and learning corner within the school. ‘ConneXion@ Woodgrove consists of a nursery as well as a study corner.  Students from the Green Activists’ Club have embarked on a reforestation project in collaboration with National Parks Board (NParks), and the plants grown are housed in this nursery. In addition to the nursery, the ConneXion@Woodgrove presents staff and students a serene environment for small-group consultation sessions.

Following the launch, guests were treated to a series of entertaining performances by the various WGS Performing Arts groups in the school hall. Awards were then presented to students who achieved outstanding results in both academic and non-academic domains over the past year. Staff, parents and partners were also recognised for their service and contributions over the past year. Guests and award recipients were then invited to the Media Resource Library to view a project exhibition, put up by the teachers of various departments in the school.  In line with the theme of ConneXion, the projects showcased the collaborative efforts by the various departments within the school and with external agencies. The event ended with a hearty lunch reception for all in the library.
