Sports Carnival and International Friendship Day
On the morning of 13th April 2012, Woodgrove Secondary School (WGS) was a sea of colours. Students were decked in their new class T-shirts, and were prepared to participate in the opening ceremony of the Sports Carnival and International Friendship Day. Soon after, the air was filled with the squeals of delighted students and the carnival kick-started with a high energy modified netball competition between the teams that consisted of the WGS school leaders and teachers. Our Principal, Mdm Sung and Vice-Principals, Mdm Mas and Mr Lee were seen showing off their game skills, much to the applauding crowd. By the end of the game, the entire school was raring to participate in the rest of the activities. Students were then dispatched to various activities around the school.
Spread across different venues in the school, there were the inter-class games where the representatives of different classes pitted against each other to fight for the championship title of each sport. The Secondary One classes played Modified Netball, the Secondary Twos showed off their ball handling techniques in Basketball, and the Secondary Three classes ruled the hall with their Floor Ball abilities and the graduating classes had a sun-tan during the Frisbee competition in the school field.
Apart from all the fun and games, there was serious competition going on at the Road Relay by another group of representatives at the 1.8km running track opposite the school. Despite the tediousness of running under the sweltering sun, the runners showed immense determination and perseverance to complete the race with their great zest and enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, back in school, another group of representatives from each class had an amazing race with time, during the International Friendship Day event. Groups had to acquire as many stamps as possible from the booths.. Conceptualised and creative booths were set-up, themed according to the cultural showcases of different countries around the world by our very own students from Secondary Three. Participants enjoyed activities such as, hopscotch, congkak and chapteh, etc. The activities aimed to create awareness of our neighbouring countries and beyond as well as highlight the importance of bi-lateral ties with these countries.
Finally, after three hours of continuous excitement, the Carnival came to a close with the International Friendship Day Celebration in the hall. The nominated Secondary Two classes first graced the stage with a fashion show, in which their representatives sashayed down the runway and strutted in their glorious eco-friendly designs which represented the countries that are participating in this year’s Olympics. There was also a showcase of nominated videos produced by our Secondary two (express) students. Woodgrovers were taken on a journey which highlighted the life and perspectives of their foreign friends living in Singapore. The winning video entitled, ‘BBC’ was one of the main highlights, which drew a resounding applause and hearty laughter from the audience. Prizes were also awarded for the different poster designs done by the Secondary One students, on Singapore’s achievement in the world front. After more than an hour of visual feasts, the celebrations drew to a close with many victorious and elated winners.
